How we handle your files

How it works, tips and questions

Open Compress PDF, tap the limit the portal gives you (for example 100 KB or 2 MB) or type any number, and download. PDF Sevak compresses, measures and repeats until the file fits under that size, and tells you plainly if it cannot get that small.

Step by step

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above, or tap to browse for it.
  2. Pick a compression level: Basic, Recommended or Maximum.
  3. Check the before and after size shown on screen.
  4. Download the smaller file.

Good to know

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends almost entirely on what is inside the file. Scanned documents and PDFs full of photographs are mostly image data, and those routinely shrink by 60 to 90 percent. A PDF exported from Word that contains only text and vector graphics is already efficient, so expect something closer to 10 to 30 percent. If a file barely shrinks, it is usually because it was already optimised.

Which compression level should I choose?

Basic keeps images close to their original resolution and is the safe choice when the document has to stay print-ready. Recommended downsamples images to screen resolution and is right for almost every upload or email attachment. Maximum pushes image quality down hard and should be used when a hard size limit matters more than how the scan looks.

Meeting a hard upload limit

Government portals, job applications and exam forms usually specify an exact ceiling, such as 300 KB or 2 MB. Rather than guessing at a quality setting, type that number into the target size box and let the tool work backwards to it: it compresses, measures the result, and tries a finer setting until the file fits. If a document will not go small enough at any setting, splitting out only the pages you actually need to submit is almost always more effective than compressing the whole thing harder.

Questions

How do I compress a PDF to exactly 300 KB?

Set 300 in the target size box, or tap the 300 KB chip. The file is compressed, measured, and compressed again at a finer setting until it lands underneath that figure, so you do not have to guess at a quality slider.

Can I compress a PDF to 100 KB?

Usually yes, though whether the result is still readable depends on the document. A text-heavy page survives aggressive compression well. A dense colour scan squeezed to 100 KB will look soft. The tool tells you the size it achieved so you can judge it before submitting.

What happens if the target size cannot be reached?

You are told plainly, and you still get the smallest version it managed. Nothing is silently handed back over your limit. If a file will not go small enough, splitting out only the pages you actually need to submit is usually the answer.

Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?

Text stays sharp at every level because it is not an image. What changes is the resolution of embedded pictures and scans. Basic is visually near-identical, Recommended is fine on screen, and Maximum is noticeably softer if you zoom in.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

Because it was already well optimised. A file that is mostly selectable text has very little redundant data to remove, so there is simply not much left to squeeze.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Not yet - this tool handles one file at a time. Merging them first and compressing the combined file is a workable alternative.

Does compressing a PDF remove its password?

No. Compression does not change encryption. Use Unlock PDF first if you need to remove a password you already know.

Is there a file size limit?

Up to 100 MB per file. Compression runs in your browser, so very large files depend on your device's memory; on phones, files up to about 50 MB work best.
